The great unbalance (project in progress)

(If you don't become the ocean, you'll be seasick every day (Leonard Cohen))

A system is a set of interacting or interdependent component parts forming a complex or intricate whole.

Every system is delineated by its spatial and temporal boundaries, surrounded and influenced by its environment. Planetary systems, eco systems, biological systems or even man made systems such as political, social or financial; systems come into and out of balance depending on their context. In this project, I will  look at systems in general from a longer time perspective and define “balance” as a temporary state and “imbalance” as the default one.

This project (still at a very experimental phase) investigates the theme of “unbalance”  in a socio - political context by approaching it freely through a series of works and installations.

Selfie Stick ( Idea sketch for installation)

A larger sculpture/arrangement of balancing objects and fragments of building materials (see photos) stands on a illusory  platform drawn on the floor  with masking tape on the floor and metal rods to create  an optical distortion that in its turn creates the illusion of unbalance.

The sculpture/arrangement  includes an iPhone on the end of a selfie stick that  pointed towards itself.

The sculpture is filming/watching itself as it stands in a curious state of unbalance.

The resulting image is is directly fed into the projector and projected onto the sculpture itself, on a larger piece of plywood.

The spectator /participant can approach the sculpture and complete it by becoming part of the unbalance.

Balance is temporary

A series of photographs of temporary sculptural arrangements  made of ordinary everyday objects.

Balance is temporary  (installation)

An Idea sketch expanding the photographic work into a full-scale installation.

The visitor is invited to walk through the balancing sticks and take a seat in the middle of the room.

The risk is that one stick might fall and provoke a chain reaction.

The purpose is to enhance the visitor´s sense of presence

If the sticks fall, it is up to the visitor to decide whether to pick them up or not, whether to participate or not...there is no instruction.

This experiment´s purpose is simply to create presence and awareness and to point to the fragility of balance.
